The panel proposes to zero in on cultural, social, and economic aspects of life and thought under postwar Soviet socialism, which made it distinct from its Stalinist predecessor as well as its capitalist counterparts. To capture its distinct historicity, we propose to rethink such cardinal concepts and experiences of Soviet life as beauty, knowledge, inequality, and exploitation.

    Participants:

    · Sofia Guerra (Princeton University), Chair

    · Anna Krylova (Duke University), Socialism and Inequality

    · Sergei Oushakine (Princeton University), Socialism and Beauty

    · Alexey Golubev (University of Houston), Socialism and Knowledge

    · Olena Lyubchenko (York University), Socialism and Exploitation
